Halp plz. Its been intermittently cutting out for a while and now its fully done for it seems. Its getting power and running (the screen shows it as playing) but no sound at all. Checked the wiring to the head unit and everything is fine there. Not sure of the speaker wiring because I have to pull the full door cards to get at it. I think the head unit I borked but was wondering if you guys have come across this before ? Kit: 4 pioneer 13cm speakers, 2 front 2 back, 2 blaupunkt tweeters and a cheapish Pioneer HU.

Were individual speakers cutting out at all? If ALL of them cut in and out at the same time, it sounds like a head unit issue to me...

Na each time it cut out it was every speaker at once. Hence why I doubt its say a broken or crossed wire to one speaker because the others would still work and the times it cut back in all speakers were functioning.

Time for a new car...

As previously mentioned, if they were all cutting out intermittently it’s a HU problem or maybe the wiring harness.

My bet is a broken contact within the headunit, since it first used to intermittently cut out, and now has cut out completely. Best bet is testing it with another headunit. It seems unlikely to be speaker wiring, since how can 6 wires break at the same time.

Your incredibly useful post includes what car you have.

How nice that is and helpful

It’s a cheapish pioneer HU...it broke.

How long have you had it for?

Do you have an amp? I’ve had that happen before, and it’s usually an amp fuse.

If not, I’d agree with Bvdv. Could be a broken/bad contact within the head unit’s output system.

Did you install this setup yourself?

(I’m in the middle of swapping my audio system back to stock, and re-wiring everything for the OE parts. I feel your pain)

Head unit is borked.

Pull the HU out of dash and hook some speakers up directly to the harness there. That can eliminate car wiring problem from equation.

However, if all speakers cutting out at same time I’d be highly suspicious of the head unit itself.

No external amps involved, right?

Basically irrelevant since the only thing left from the stock system is a couple lengths of wire.

Yeah I just went to try the old HU in it but the bloody thing started working again... Will have to wait until it cuts again.

I doubt it. I know some radio systems in a particular car where if a body module fails, the radio won’t work.

Na no external amps. That connect a speaker straight to it is a good tip though ill have to try that.

That’s fair enough, my car is super simple though, the radio isn’t tied into any other modules. Its a 2010 Renault Twingo.

Yeah it does... Would’ve rather put the cash toward some alloy wheels but my commute would be mighty dull without a stereo haha.

Tone generator is super helpful to test the speaker and wiring while only pulling the head unit. Hook it to the speaker leads and listen to each one individually.
